For 2022 we are open from 2 April to 1 October. You can check available dates for visiting and make bookings on our site, however if you have any questions please do call or email us.
Cross the water and join us and our way of life here at Doune, a destination unlike any other. Remote and peaceful, set amongst the magnificent coastal scenery of the Scottish Highlands, Doune is on the Western shore of the Knoydart peninsula – one of Europe’s last wild places.
We’re off grid with no road vehicle access, the only way in or out is by sea or on foot. We’re remote, but not isolated, operating our boat to transport our guests the 40 minutes by sea from Mallaig.
We’re the choice for hikers, climbers, kayakers, wildlife lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, artists, crafters, foodies and many looking to simply sit back and relax.
So, join us, join in and join an exclusive band of people who can talk of their incredible experiences in one of the most special places in Scotland.
Stays at Doune can be three, four or seven nights or longer. Changeovers take place on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Stone lodges and bothy

Accommodation prices include bed, breakfast, packed lunch and dinner in the award winning Doune Dining Room. Our en-suite rooms are natural and simple with comfortable beds and stunning views across to Skye and the Cuillin Ridge.
Doune sits between the hillside and the sea. Our Stone Lodges were built on the shore of Doune Bay and you can listen to the sea break on the beach outside your room. Outside in the bay you watch the Doune boats on their moorings and beyond them Dun Head, the site of an Iron Age fort where you can still find the vitrified remains of the walls.
The Bothy is a delightful room at the end of the restaurant building. Light and airy and brightly furnished, the room has a comfortable single bed which can be converted to twin beds if required. There is a wash-hand basin in the room – a shower and toilets are just next door.
All holidays are fully catered. We have a communal approach to dining with guests sitting together for meals in the convivial atmosphere of the Dining Room, many making lasting friendships and even returning for future trips together.
Getting here
Doune is located on the remote peninsula of Knoydart, on the North West coast of Scotland. We are 4 miles North of the small fishing port of Mallaig, overlooking the Island of Skye. We collect our guests using our own boat, Gripper II, from the public pontoon in Mallaig. Please do not get on any other Knoydart boats which might be there as they will be going to Inverie, six miles from Doune.

It is quite possible to fly to Glasgow and then train to Mallaig (the station is 100 metres from the harbour). Please be careful about flying to Prestwick Airport as this will add considerably to your transfer times. If flying to Inverness then car hire is the best option to get over to the West and can be a very good way to include Doune in a tour of the Highlands.
If coming by train, a station change is required in Glasgow (a free bus is provided). In Fort William you just cross the platform to the Mallaig line. Many people enjoy using the excellent London to Fort William sleeper service.
For travel by car, We are approximately 100 miles fom Inverness and 150 miles from Glasgow Airport, however travel times are roughly the same – about 3 hours. Not all car parking in Mallaig is free and the boat skipper can show you where to park.
Bus services to Fort William are good, but unfortunately unless staying overnight the timetable to Mallaig rarely fits in with our boats.
To get directions to Mallaig click on the icon on the map below and enter your starting point. If using your own incar GPS please use the general Mallaig postcode of PH41 4PU. DO NOT use our home postcode as you could end up 100 miles away up a mountain track.
